What to Pack for an Out-of-Town Race

Get a list of running items you'll need to remember to pack for your next out-of-town race. | What to Pack for an Out-of-Town Race | Runner Vibes

My third marathon is this weekend! I’m running the Seattle Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon, which is about two hours away from my home. Getting up to drive to the race would be inconvenient to say the least. So I’m staying in a hotel near the start line. Since I’m in taper week I’ve been obsessing about race-day weather, getting in the right mindset, and planning…which of course includes making lists. So I’m sharing my race weekend packing list. If you have an out-of-town race, this list of what to pack will help you too! (Plus, I’ve made it easy for you to download and print it.)

Day / Night Before Race

  • Precooked Dinner
The hotel I’ve chosen has a microwave and a fridge in the room. I am cooking my tried and tested spaghetti the night before and bringing it to eat it in the hotel room.
  • Electrolyte Drink
It’s going to be a warm race day, so I’ll need to take in some extra sodium the day before.
  • Foam Roller
  • Heating Pad
In case I have any aches and pains the night before, a little heat will go a long way.
  • Chamomile Tea and/or Cherry Juice
My bedtime drink of choice is cherry juice. It gets me sleepy, and it has extra goodness in it. But if I don’t have cherry juice, Sleepytime or chamomile tea will do the trick.
  • Movie/Book/Entertainment
After a walk to the expo, I plan on RE-LAX-ING. Hopefully that’ll include watching a movie in the hotel and reading to help me fall asleep early.
  • Compression Socks
  • White Noise “Music”
Just in case the room doesn’t have a fan to drown out the city noises, I’ve downloaded some white noise sounds to help me fall asleep.
  • Driver’s License
I’ll have to show ID at the race expo checkin.

Race Morning

  • Breakfast
My pre-run meal is two instant oatmeal packs mixed with a banana and cinnamon.
  • Coffee & Cream
  • Warm Layers to Toss
  • Pre-race Snack
  • SPF
  • Heart Burn Medicine
I have horrible heart burn, and it gets worse when I run, which is apparently “normal.” So I like to take a heart burn pill before I run.
  • Allergy Medicine
Ugh allergy season makes breathing and running very complicated.

These socks were a gift from my BRF, and I will definitely be wearing them race weekend to celebrate my bad-assery.

After Race

  • Baby Wipes
These puppies will make me fresh for the after-party festivities and hold me over until I can get a real shower.
  • Nutrition
  • Fresh Bra
  • Clean Shirt
I’ll be rocking the race’s finisher’s shirt! I’ve earned it!
  • Comfy Shoes & Socks

To help stave off post-race aches.
  • Driver’s License
There will be a free beer at the finish line!
